Network for Environmental Bioinorganic and Toxicological Research
NEBITOR
Proposal
Environmental exposure to metal species in the early years of life can cause neurodegenerative diseases in adults including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other disease, through epigenetic processes (e.g. methylation). Methylation of DNA can induce stable alterations in the transcriptome as well as modified mitochondrial bioenergetics resulting in lasting neuroendocrine changes and neurobehavioral alterations (cognitive and motor). However, the mechanistic aspects and the phenotypical manifestations of these effects are still unclear, which require interdisciplinary approaches. In this case, Bioinorganic Chemistry is at the crossroads between inorganic chemistry and biology, including environmental toxicological aspects. For that reason, we are proposing an International Network for Environmental Bioinorganic and Toxicological Research – NEBITOR.
